India
Visualizing 28 pieces of data from the CIA World Factbook
BRIEF
I completed this project during a 2-week summer intensive on information design at RISD. The challenge was to cohesively design visualizations for 28 pieces of data about an assigned country and assemble them into a single print layout.
DATA
Students were each provided with pages from the 2016 CIA World Factbook for our assigned countries. Because I wanted my poster design to feature a detailed map of India, I supplemented this initial dataset with additional data about each of the states and their capitals.
DELIVERABLE
Iconography
I drew inspiration for the visual language of the agricultural icons from the Indian modernist painter Jamini Roy. Roy’s populist paintings became icons themselves, capturing folk traditions in the construction of an indigenous visual culture in line with Gandhian socialism and the concept of Swaraj, or self-rule.
Roy frequently painted cows, which are sacred in Hinduism, with signature graphic silhouettes. I created a cow icon that incorporated aspects of Roy’s shapes and used it as a guide for the remaining livestock icons.
