Media For Work & Play

Visualizing personal media usage for one week

BRIEF

The concept of this project was to track my personal media usage over seven consecutive days and visualize the data so that the user can compare the types of media I used. I originally created this visualization under the guidance of Douglass Scott, a RISD professor who introduced me to information design and data visualization in 2018.

DATA

During a week in September 2018, I wrote down every website I visited and application I used each day. My media usage fell neatly into work and play buckets at that time, as I was still working as a college guidance counselor. I eventually created a digital version of this dataset, aggregating individual websites and apps by category and total time spent per day. Since I did not know how to code yet, I created the visualizations manually in Adobe Illustrator.

When I designed these visualizations, I knew that I wanted to leave my job in college guidance and become a data visualization designer. The colors that I chose for the work and play categories reflect how I felt about my job at the time.
